You Don’t Have to be Born Brilliant - John McGrath
I am not doing a review on this one just yet, as I am currently reading this book WITH a team I am mentoring.
A great way to use this blog for your fullest potential is to get a mastermind group to all read the book at the same time, and all comment on this post so we can all learn at the same time from things we all may have picked up, or some of us may have missed or interpreted differently, but beneficially so.
I may adjust this post as we go, or I may leave it as is, and comment along with the team
John’s a great author, and has DONE IT, and is still doing it, rather than just writing about it. I mean, anyone who is in real estate sales who does not buy John’s books should leave real estate immediately.
Think about it, the guy has read every professional book there is to read, he has applied what he has learned in the field of building a brilliant real estate sales business, arguably the most successful independant agency in Australia, and has summarised what he has learned in a couple of books. Like I said, if you don’t buy and read them, my advice is to leave the industry, as he is spelling out the ‘how to’ for you.

My first comment and observation is that John very early in his life, read a book that I pinched from my Dad very early in my life, being
‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill. (click to read my review).
and he also shared my reservations on whether such a book has any value to ME (or him as the case may be).
And now that he has read hundreds of books on the subject of success, business, real estate and wealth, and has APPLIED that knowledge in creating his brilliant real estate business, I am excited about reading the rest of this book. Remember, in his words, SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES. Look for the clues in this book and others and adjust your life accordingly. I will be heeding this advice myself more often.
I also like the bits on Enthusiasm, beliefs and positive thinking, but I don’t want to hog the discussion.
A well spent 45 minutes reading through Part 1 though.

Great book. Fantastic for anyone who is new in real estate, or just need something to read to put them back on track for their real estate career

Pick a book mate, but my next is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Covey. I can’t believe I’ve never read that one, so it’s next for me.

It doesn’t matter what your job, career or business is, this book will help you get on track. It’s good to read a book that has someone’s examples and show how they went from just starting out, to being the success they are today. In saying that, you have to apply what is suggested rather than think it will happen from just thinking about it.
The only thing missing was showing that there can be a balance between work and pleasure. I am sure there are plenty of people who find that their family can be just as inportant.
A good book to get on track with, and also to read every now and then when you feel things are slipping a little.

Definitely agreed on that point Kerry. You’re right about balance, and family, and I live my life that way. That being said when it was necessary in my career (like at the commencement of the start of a new real estate career) I think it takes a little bit less balance and a little bit more ‘crazy insane activity’ to get the momentum kickstarted.
Go hard,
